About

Raised between the rugged landscapes of North Wales and the mountains of the French Alps, Ashleigh Roberts’ practice is shaped by a lifelong immersion in powerful natural environments. Her work seeks to recreate the experience of being absorbed in nature, whether among trees, the sky, rock, fire, or sea, where the eye drifts through infinite, almost hypnotic patterns, continually drawn back to moments of intricate detail.

While deeply rooted in the natural world, most of Ashleigh’s paintings are not intended as direct representations of landscape. Instead, they capture fleeting, sensory impressions: the way light dances across the surface of water, the rhythmic movement of a lake or ocean, or mist rolling slowly over mountainous terrain. These moments are translated into large-scale, textured oil paintings that prioritise atmosphere, movement, and emotional resonance over literal depiction.

Through layered surfaces, expressive mark-making, and the use of unconventional materials, Ashleigh creates works that exist somewhere between dream and memory. Soft, fluid blends interact with raw, tactile marks, reflecting the tension between harmony and chaos, and the shifting balance between external environments and internal emotional states. Subtly informed by years of travel and exposure to diverse cultures, the work absorbs fragments of place and experience, sometimes physically embedded through materials such as sand mixed into the paint.

By blurring the boundaries between mind and landscape, the work invites a deeper, more intuitive engagement with the hypnotic beauty of the natural world. At its core, the practice seeks to create a moment of calm within an increasingly fast-paced and overstimulated world, offering space for pause, reflection, and reconnection. In a time where the mind is often overwhelmed, the work evokes a raw, sensory connection to nature, encouraging a quieter awareness that exists between observation and emotion.

There is a continual interplay between what is seen and what is felt, between landscape and inner state, creating an immersive experience where viewers can momentarily lose themselves. In doing so, the work offers a gentle detachment from the weight of human impact on the natural world, allowing for a renewed sense of presence and connection.

Through an evolving and varied visual language, the practice embraces uncertainty and experimentation. Each piece forms part of an ongoing exploration into contrast, unity, and the fluid relationship between control and spontaneity.
